Faith and Family

The book of Psalms is one of our favorite books of the Bible.  It is not unusual to see Forrest songwriting with his Bible at his side open to this very book.  I am studying the Song of Ascents…and when our boys get back from tour then it will be a family thing.  What is the Song of Ascents?  It is well explained here.  In short, it is fifteen Psalms (chapters 120-134) that the Israelites prayed on their way to the temple in Jerusalem.

It cannot be argued that the book of Psalms is one of the best collections of songs ever written.  What better way to start and to end your day?

“I lift up my eyes toward the mountains; whence shall help come to me?  My help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.” Psalm 121:1

Yesterday was our daughter’s 1st Holy Communion Shepherd’s Day Retreat.  In one week she will be receiving her 1st Holy Communion.  Father has a special tradition at these retreats to make bread with the kids.  He asks the children to shape their bread into a shape that most reminds them of God.  After the bread is done, each child, while sharing the breaking of the bread with their family members says, “I am sharing this with you because I love you.”

After cleaning up in the kitchen, the kids then go into the church with Father to talk about their special day of receiving Holy Communion for the first time.  He talks about what it truly means.  He shows them how they will receive, where they will sit, why we sit and stand so much in church, (Standing is a form of respect as if God has entered the room.  Kneeling during mass at those special moments of prayer.)

What I learned yesterday?  When my children were baptized, and the priest traced a cross on their forehead, my husband and I along with the priest were saying, “You belong to God.”

Where ever life takes my children I can rest in knowing that they truly belong to God.
